What Learners Say
“Thanks so much to Azeem at Latics for helping me get my automatic licence! I had really struggled with my driving before I had Azeem as an instructor and was a really nervous driver — but his calm and patient demeanour and clear instruction really helped me to advance. He always makes sure each lesson has a specific focus, which I found really helpful. I'd 100% recommend him to anyone wanting to learn in an automatic car.”

“Danielle is amazing, she gave me confidence I didn't know I had to drive. She put me at ease from the first lesson. Danielle is the most supportive, friendliest, most reliable instructor I have ever had. I passed first time this week and I couldn't have done it without her. The way she teaches is amazing and she knows how to make you understand what she's saying with patience and composure even in the most testing situations. I would recommend Danielle to anyone who wants automatic lessons.”

“I have a condition called dyspraxia which affects my spatial awareness, sense of direction and memory, all of which of course affect my ability to drive. I was placed with Sohail who was really great and patient with me — he never got frustrated or annoyed. He booked me in for extra lessons in the weeks before my test, which helped me to pass first time! I would highly recommend Sohail and Latics to anyone who is nervous about learning to drive.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an automatic licence limit me?
An automatic licence means you can only drive automatics. If you later want to drive a manual, you will need to take another test. However, many people find automatics perfectly suited to their needs.
Are automatic lessons more expensive?
Automatic lessons are usually slightly more expensive because automatic tuition cars typically cost more to buy, insure, maintain and repair than manual cars. The difference is small, and many learners find they need fewer lessons overall because there is no clutch control or gear changing to master.
Who are automatic lessons best for?
Automatic lessons suit a wide range of learners. They are a good choice if you want simpler car control, plan to drive automatic cars or electric vehicles, have a disability or medical reason that makes manual driving difficult, or simply prefer to focus more on road awareness and decision making.
How long are automatic lessons?
We recommend 90-minute lessons, but if you need a shorter or longer lesson time, this can be arranged with your instructor. 90 minutes gives you enough time to warm up, practise properly and make steady progress.
Will I learn faster in an automatic?
Some learners do progress faster in an automatic because they can focus on steering, observation, planning and road positioning without worrying about clutch control or gear changes. It still varies from person to person.
Can I switch from manual to automatic lessons?
Yes. If you have started in a manual car and feel automatic would suit you better, contact us and we can check availability with a suitable automatic instructor.
Can I choose my automatic driving instructor?
Sometimes, yes. Browse our instructor profiles and let us know if you have a preference. This will be subject to their availability and whether they cover your area.
Do automatic lessons still prepare me properly for real driving?
Yes. You will still learn the same essential driving skills: observation, planning, positioning, junctions, roundabouts, parking, dual carriageways and independent driving. The main difference is that the car handles the gear changes for you.
Can I use my instructor's automatic car for the driving test?
Yes, as long as your instructor feels you are test-ready and the car is available for your test time.
